I'm all about renewing something old in our closets to something fun and new. I had this, this, and this saved to my pinterest for a while now and I finally got some time to finish these for myself. I am a sucker for elbow patches! And although this week has brought the sunshine, these sweaters are light weight so I can still get some use out of them before the summer (and there's always next winter too).
I found this Banana Republic sweater at the thrift store and thought it would be even cuter with some leather elbow patches. I didn't have any leather fabric on hand, so I found an inexpensive black leather purse and cut the patches out of it. I suppose you could just go to a fabric store and purchase some leather, but I don't live super close to craft stores (that I know of). And sometimes a small purse from the thrift store is cheap. They had faux leather ones too that were even cheaper but I wanted it to wear well, so I chose a bag with real leather (you just have to check the inside tag to see what it's made of).
I'm happy with how it turned out.
I also had this Old Navy cardigan that I had for years. It's been an old favorite and I've wanted to put some patches on it as well. Brandon had a old coat he didn't wear anymore and I took the suede elbow patches off of it and used those for this one.
And there you go. Pretty quick and now these old sweaters are kind of like new again. The patches could be hand sewn or done by a machine. I did both by machine only to save some time.
