So, this was two dresses that I had, combined. The top was from an old dress Brandon bought me years ago that is now too short. The lace from the top of the dress was always my favorite part, so I knew even though I didn't wear this dress anymore I have been holding on to it to use it for something else. The bottom was an old smocked gauzy type dress that I found a few years ago at the thrift store. I really liked the feel of this dress but the top was not super flattering. It was more of a comfy dress (which I still really liked). So, I cut off the top of the smocked dress, and carefully cut the bottom of the lacey dress (it had some floral print on the bottom). The lacey top dress had a built in lining that I was able to keep attached so I don't have to worry about a slip. Together they made a perfect pair.
I'm super happy with my new dress. And when I can make something in an hour or less that's even better. Now I just have to wait for some warmer weather so I can wear it!
If you are thinking about starting to sew but feel a little unsure, I would suggest starting with a repurposed project. There's really nothing to lose if it's something you already have (no money invested), and the garment already has it's shape. It's then just up to you to make it into something you like or make it new. But I wouldn't use your favorites until you are comfortable with your sewing ability. I've never taken proper sewing classes. My mom showed me the basics of how to use a sewing machine when they bought me one, but other than that I have just learned through trial and error. If you have patience with yourself it can be really fun and rewarding. Happy Sewing!
